Exploring the complex history of turbans, headties and headwraps with a virtual workshop,imagery and showing of the film Wax Print

A symbol of resistance identity and validation of beauty, head ties and head wraps have been worn by women in Africa and the African diaspora for generations. Through this workshop led by Sandra Soteriou, explore the background and cultural significance of wearing head scarves, and learn about the origin and significance of the fabrics used. There will also be a screening of the film ‘Wax’ followed by a Q&A with director Aiwan Obinyan. Bring along your fabric, scarves and materials to try out different wrapping techniques. African print and headscarves will also be available to purchase at the event.

From the villages of Indonesia to the cotton fields of America, from European industrial mills to the bustling markets and sewing schools of West Africa, the story of one fabric and how it came to symbolise a continent, it’s people and their struggle for freedom.
